Start Enshrouded by following the opening quests, building a small working base and preparing for short trips into the Shroud. Save the perfect build and permanent castle for later.
The first few sessions give you plenty to figure out: how much time to spend building, what to take into the fog and when to move on from the starting area. This guide covers those decisions without story spoilers or endgame loot routes.
Prepared Oct. 14, 2026, ahead of the Oct. 15 release of 1.0. Changes described below come from the developer's published notes; this is a researched guide, not a hands-on review of the release build.
Let the opening quests guide your exploration
Follow the initial objectives through placing your Flame Altar and rescuing the Blacksmith. Explore nearby distractions along the way, but return to those objectives when you're unsure what to do next.
Use the main quests to find your footing. Leave the guides promising powerful equipment far beyond your current area for another playthrough, when you already know what you're skipping.
There's a practical reason to be careful with old walkthroughs. Keen's 1.0 notes describe changes to early encounters, roads and crafting progression. The developer also says upgrading the Flame will unlock the following tier's craftable armor sets. If an older guide sends you searching for a particular unlock, check the current game first.
Start with a difficulty you can learn on
Default is a sensible first choice. Keen recommends it for first-time players; Relaxed reduces enemies and increases resources and loot for players more interested in building and exploration.
Try a few outings before changing everything. If gathering is the part you dislike, adjust resource settings. If recovering dropped materials makes you dread experimenting, consider keeping your inventory on death. Keen's gameplay settings documentation covers those options.
Keeping your inventory makes failed experiments less costly; recovering dropped materials gives you a reason to plan the next attempt carefully. Choose the consequence you enjoy playing with. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helps.
Build a useful first home
Give yourself a place for storage, crafting and the survivors you recruit. A small, organized home is a good first project. You can expand it when you know which parts of building you enjoy.
Comfort gives furnishing your home a practical benefit: it extends your Rested buff. That buff affects stamina regeneration, a mechanic also documented in Keen's Patch 12 notes.
Check your Rested buff before leaving home. If you're spending a session decorating, look at which furnishings improve comfort as well as which ones look good. You can make a functional cottage now and spend another evening deciding where the tower goes.

Treat the Shroud as a planned outing
Choose one objective before entering the fog. Remember your route in and start heading out while you still have time to retrace it. An unfamiliar side passage can wait for another trip.
Keen's official tips recommend watching for Shroud-time refills and clear areas where you can recover Shroud time. Flame upgrades and the Inner Fires skill can increase your available time.
Make your first trips short enough to learn the terrain. Coming back with a known route is useful progress even when you leave some loot behind.
Eat before leaving, and pack healing
Food provides temporary stat bonuses. Read the effects and bring food that supports the health, stamina or mana you need. Carry healing separately; bandages restore health over time, so give them time to work. These are among the preparations in Keen's exploration tips.
Before replacing your whole build after a difficult fight, check whether your food and Rested buffs were active. Keep a small supply ready at home so preparing for the next outing takes less sorting.
Experiment with combat before choosing a build guide
Try the weapons you find and learn how to leave yourself room to retreat. Carry a ranged option for enemies you struggle to reach.
If you try a staff, check your spell charges as well as your mana. Keen's staff and bow guide explains that ordinary staff spells use ammunition; eternal spells become available through progression.
Be cautious with advice that dismisses magic based on an older version. Keen's 1.0 combat preview describes new spells, wand heavy attacks and changes to spell costs and casting times. Those announcements don't establish a best beginner class. Give yourself time to find a combat style you like before committing to a detailed build.
Make travel and storage easier as you progress
When you craft a glider or grappling hook, equip it before trying to use it. Flame upgrades also allow more altars, which can become useful fast-travel destinations above the Shroud, according to the official tips.
Keep an eye on storage unlocks. The 1.0 notes bring regular 24-slot chests and magic chests earlier in progression and allow chest upgrades in place. Magic storage is worth exploring when sorting starts interrupting your building: the earlier Forging the Path update lets you select building materials directly from magic chests.
Agree on progression before starting with friends
Friends with different schedules should agree on what happens between group sessions. You might be happy for someone to gather materials while everyone else is offline, but want to discover a new area together.
Decide which adventures you'll save for the group and whether everyone wants fresh characters without equipment brought from another world. The 1.0 notes say quests will identify themselves as personal or world quests, which should help you discuss what to tackle together.
Check platforms before organizing a session. Keen's launch FAQ says cross-platform play will not be available at launch. It also confirms that PC Early Access owners won't need to buy the game again and can continue their saves. If you're returning to an existing character, spend your skill points again before leaving base: the 1.0 update resets the skill tree.
