Tier lists are noisy on their own. Different creators test at different key levels, assume different group compositions, and sometimes use completely different tier labels. I wanted to see what the picture looked like when those lists were combined instead of treating any single video as the answer.

For this aggregate, I reviewed 29 YouTube videos published during the 30 days leading up to August 9, 2026. Sixteen comparable manual-play Mythic+ videos contributed at least one scored placement. General, Raid, Assisted Combat, partial, derivative, and parody lists were kept in the source audit but were not mixed into the headline Mythic+ result.

The final workbook contains 421 placement rows. Every creator list was normalized within its own board, then weighted by publication date using a 14-day half-life. More recent lists matter more, but older PTR testing still contributes.

The result is not a DPS or survivability prediction. It is a summary of where creators placed each spec relative to the other specs on their own lists.

Coverage: every tank has 8 ranked sources, healers have 6 to 7, and DPS specs have 6 to 8. Explicitly unranked specs were left out of that source score instead of being treated as last place.

Weighted aggregate tier list

For a readable tier-list view, the weighted scores are grouped into fixed bands:

S: 80 to 100

A: 60 to 79.9

B: 40 to 59.9

C: 20 to 39.9

D: below 20

The number after each spec is its recency-weighted aggregate score. Scores are best compared within the same role because role-specific and all-spec boards use different comparison pools.

Arms Warrior and Arcane Mage are the strongest points of agreement across the DPS lists. Elemental Shaman and Frost Death Knight round out the S tier. Devourer lands just below the cutoff, although it has one fewer scored source because one creator left it unranked.

How the scoring works

Each video keeps its original tier names and ordering.

Tied specs receive the same within-list midrank percentile from 0 to 100.

Explicitly unranked specs and duplicate creator/spec entries are not scored.

Each normalized score is multiplied by the video recency weight.

The weighted scores are averaged for each spec.

This avoids forcing every creator into the same S-through-D labels. It also prevents a creator with six tiers from having more influence than one who only used three.

The spread between a spec's best and worst placement is available in the workbook. A high average with a wide spread means creators disagreed, while a high average with a narrow spread is a stronger consensus.

I didn’t play the original Path of Exile, but I’ve spent a lot of time with Path of Exile 2 and other action RPGs. Leagues and seasons are a standard part of the genre, even though the idea can initially feel strange, especially if you are coming from an MMORPG.

I also play MMOs, so I understand that reaction. MMO players are accustomed to thinking of their character as a permanent investment. You spend years collecting gear, achievements, cosmetics, mounts, reputations, and other forms of progression. The character itself becomes a long-term identity.

Modern MMOs have become increasingly seasonal too, however. World of Warcraft, for example, now organizes much of its progression around seasons, gear resets, rotating dungeons, and regularly changing reward structures. The reset is not always as complete as it is in an ARPG, but it is trying to solve many of the same problems.

Games Become “Solved”

As an ARPG season continues, the game becomes progressively more solved. Players determine which builds are strongest, which skills perform best, which items are most valuable, and which farming strategies produce the greatest rewards. Efficient progression routes are documented, build guides become more refined, and the community gradually learns how to optimize nearly every part of the game.

That discovery process is one of the most enjoyable parts of a new season. Everyone is experimenting, basic items matter, unusual drops can be exciting, and there is still some uncertainty about how the new systems will work. Over time, much of that uncertainty disappears.

This does not mean there is nothing left to do, but the overall experience changes. Instead of discovering what works, players are increasingly following established strategies or refining already powerful characters. A new league creates an opportunity for the game to become unsolved again.

Seasons Create Natural Balance Points

Developers also tend to avoid making drastic balance changes during an active season. Imagine investing dozens or hundreds of hours into a character only for a mid-season patch to completely break the build. A skill could lose most of its damage, an important item interaction could be removed, or a farming strategy could suddenly stop working.

Sometimes changes like that are unavoidable, particularly when something is bugged or damaging the game. In general, though, developers have a strong incentive to avoid invalidating a player’s investment while the season is underway.

Seasonal resets provide a natural breakpoint for larger changes. At the beginning of a new league, developers can make broader adjustments to skills, classes, items, bosses, progression systems, and endgame mechanics. They can introduce experimental features without disrupting an economy and player base that are already deeply established.

Players may not agree with every balance decision, but the beginning of a season is the least disruptive time to make those changes. Everyone already expects to start a new character and adapt to a new version of the game.

The Economy Eventually Becomes Saturated

Trade is another major reason ARPGs benefit from resets. At the beginning of a league, even relatively basic items and currencies can have value. Most players are still progressing, strong gear is scarce, and the economy is developing alongside the player base.

As the season continues, wealth accumulates. Established players gain access to increasingly efficient farming strategies. More high-end items enter the market. Common items become nearly worthless, while the price of the most desirable equipment can rise beyond the reach of ordinary players.

Someone joining late may be entering an economy shaped by months of accumulated currency, optimized farming, and market knowledge. They are technically playing the same game, but they are not starting from the same position as the players who have been there since launch.

A new league resets that economy. Everyone begins without established wealth, equipment, or market control. Early upgrades matter again, ordinary currency is useful, and players progress through the economy together. It is not a perfectly equal starting line (experienced players will always progress faster), but it is much closer than joining a permanent economy that has been accumulating wealth for years.

Why Not Make Standard the “Real” Endgame?

One suggestion is that Standard could become an extremely difficult version of the game. Seasonal characters would eventually transfer there, and Standard could offer stronger bosses, extreme difficulty, PvP, or another long-term progression system.

It sounds appealing in theory. Players could enjoy a normal league and then graduate their completed characters into a harder permanent sandbox. The problem is that making Standard dramatically harder would punish many of the people who specifically want to keep using their old characters.

Characters, items, and currency already transfer to Standard when a league ends. That progress is not necessarily deleted. Players can continue using those characters rather than participating in the next reset.

If Standard were balanced around dramatically greater difficulty, however, many transferred characters would immediately become ineffective. A build that comfortably completed seasonal content might arrive in Standard and suddenly be unable to participate in its intended endgame.

Developers would then have to balance Standard around years of accumulated characters, discontinued mechanics, old equipment, unusual item combinations, and potentially legacy versions of items that no longer exist in current leagues. They would also need to decide what happens when a character transfers from one balance environment into another. Should the character be automatically adjusted? Should its gear be converted? Should Standard have exclusive progression systems and rewards? Should builds be balanced separately for Standard and seasonal play? At that point, the developers would effectively be maintaining two different versions of the game.

Extreme Difficulty Does Not Solve Permanent Progression

Making the enemies “10,000 times harder” would also not create an endless progression system by itself. Players would eventually solve that version of the game too.

The strongest builds would be identified, the most efficient strategies would spread, and the economy would continue accumulating wealth. Unless Standard also received regular resets or constant power increases, it would eventually reach the same point as any other permanent mode.

Developers could continue adding harder bosses, stronger items, and higher progression tiers, but that introduces another problem: power creep. Each new update would need to provide a meaningful challenge to characters that may have been accumulating power for years. New rewards would have to be stronger than old rewards, which would make earlier content increasingly irrelevant.

MMOs frequently deal with this by introducing new gear tiers and indirectly resetting player power. Even when characters remain permanent, much of their equipment progression is replaced when a new expansion or season begins.

A new raid or dungeon tier almost always ships with a higher item level ceiling than the content before it. Gear that was best-in-slot a few months earlier becomes a minor upgrade, then a sidegrade, then something replaced in the first hour of the new tier. Nobody deletes the character or takes away the old gear, but the specific power and status that gear represented is gone anyway.

The reset still exists. It is simply presented differently.

In ARPGs, Building the Character Is the Experience

The biggest difference between many ARPGs and MMOs is what each genre treats as the central experience. In an MMO, the character is often a persistent platform through which you experience years of content. The character continues, even if its gear and progression systems periodically change.

In an ARPG, building the character is often the main experience. Choosing a class, planning a build, finding upgrades, solving resource problems, and gradually turning a weak character into a powerful one are not just preparation for the game. They are the game.

Once the character is complete, many players feel that the most interesting part of the journey is over. They may continue chasing rare items or defeating harder content, but the frequency of meaningful upgrades steadily declines.

A new season brings back that sense of progression. It gives players a reason to try another class, experiment with a new skill, interact with a different mechanic, or approach the endgame from another direction.

Your Progress Is Not Necessarily Meaningless

It is understandable to feel that seasonal progress is being devalued. If the main reason you play is to maintain one character indefinitely, the seasonal ARPG model may never feel entirely satisfying. That is a legitimate preference rather than a misunderstanding of the genre.

However, seasonal progress does not have to be meaningless simply because it eventually stops being current. The character still provided an experience. You learned the game, completed challenges, tested a build, collected items, and participated in that particular version of the league. The value came from playing through the progression, not solely from preserving every advantage forever.

It is similar to finishing a single-player RPG. Completing the game does not make the time spent playing it meaningless. The journey had value even if you later begin another character or move on to another game. Standard exists for players who want to preserve and revisit their characters, but it is not intended to replace the seasonal progression loop with a second, dramatically harder game.

Seasons Are a Tradeoff

Seasonal systems are not perfect. They can make players feel pressured to restart. They can reduce the appeal of investing heavily in one character, and they can create the impression that permanent modes are secondary.

The benefit is that seasons allow the game to remain flexible. They reset the economy, refresh progression, create safe points for major balance changes, encourage build experimentation, and give the entire community a reason to return at the same time.

For players coming from MMOs, it helps to think of an ARPG league less like deleting a permanent character and more like starting a new campaign with a changed ruleset. The character may eventually move to Standard, but the real purpose of the league was the experience of building it in the first place.
